01Warum ein eigenes Navi? Why my own navigation?
I had already brought photos, passwords and mail home. Navigation was the big gap: it runs every day, it knows my routine better than almost any other app, and it always went through someone else's servers.
The honest answer first: navigation is a lot more work than a photo cloud. There is no ready-made solution you can simply install. So I built the app myself, with the AI agent as the programmer and me as the tester in the car.
02Wie es grob funktioniertRoughly how it works
The app on the phone talks to exactly one counterpart: a server of my own at home. It calculates the route, knows the timetables and fetches the traffic situation. No third-party service learns where I'm going. The server is not publicly exposed on the internet.
- Maps: open map data maintained by volunteers worldwide, for all of Germany on my own server.
- Traffic jams: from the open interface of the motorway authority, polled every few minutes, no account needed. Plus roadworks and closures on regional roads.
- Buses and trains: the timetable for all of Germany as open data, with real-time updates. Even trams come with their delays.
- Announcements: in the same self-trained voice as my voice assistant.
03Drei Arten, unterwegs zu seinThree ways of getting around
- In the car: landscape layout, a sidebar on the driver's side with the next turn, the lanes, the speed limit and my own speed. When the phone connects to the car radio, the app starts by itself. In the morning it heads straight to work, in the evening home.
- By bus and train: nearby stops with the next departures, connections with real-time data. The large font from the phone's settings is respected.
- On foot: guidance along pavements and stairs. Instead of constant announcements, the phone just vibrates at the turn.
Above it all stands one sentence I wrote down at the start: “I want to navigate, and that's it.” Every new feature had to measure up to it: few settings, few fields, few taps.
04Was die Testwoche gezeigt hatWhat the test week showed
For a week I drove with it every day. A lot worked straight away, some things didn't:
- The music stayed quiet. After every announcement the music stayed dimmed until the next one. A small bug with a big effect, fixed quickly.
- Stops changed their numbers. The open timetable renumbers its stops with every timetable change. My saved favourite stop suddenly showed buses from a town in Bavaria. Now the app remembers the place instead of the number.
- The city is still missing. Closures on motorways and regional roads come through. City streets are reported by the city itself, and those are missing so far.
- Too optimistic. In city traffic the app calculates the arrival too early. Instead of guessing, it now measures on every trip how far the forecast and the real travel time are apart. Only with those numbers will it be adjusted.
An experiment runs alongside: the camera recognises traffic signs, entirely on the phone, without a single image leaving the device. Nothing of it is displayed yet. After well over a thousand recognised signs, the evaluation was sobering: for speed signs the camera mostly disagreed with the known limit, and almost always because of signs that weren't meant for my lane at all. So for now the limit from the map data stays.
05Was ich gelernt habeWhat I learned
- Open data is better than its reputation. Real-time data for trams, traffic jams from the motorway, timetables for the whole country: all freely available, no account needed.
- Read the licence first, then build. Big commercial map services explicitly forbid using their data for your own navigation. That ended my original plan after one evening of reading, before I had built a single line.
- Test in the car, not at the desk. That the night map was too dark and the zoom at turns barely noticeable only showed up on real drives.
06Wenn du selbst anfangen willstIf you want to start yourself
As of today I drive with it every day, and part of the family uses the bus and train information. But nobody has to build their own app to leave fewer traces.
There are free navigation apps that calculate the route offline on the phone and send nothing out. That's the easiest first step.
