Monitoring-Werkzeuge können erstaunlich viel: Kurven, Alarme, Auswertungen über Monate. Aber sie sind für Leute gebaut, die den ganzen Tag davor sitzen. Ich wollte morgens mit dem Kaffee in der Hand in zehn Sekunden wissen: Ist alles in Ordnung — und wenn nicht, was muss ich tun?
Monitoring tools can do an astonishing amount: graphs, alerts, analyses over months. But they're built for people who sit in front of them all day. I wanted to know within ten seconds, coffee in hand: Is everything fine — and if not, what do I need to do?
Was man ungern ansieht, sieht man irgendwann nicht mehr an. Und dann nützt auch die beste Überwachung nichts.
What you don't like looking at, you eventually stop looking at. And then even the best monitoring is useless.
02Davorsetzen statt umbauenPut something in front instead of rebuilding
Die bewährten Werkzeuge sammeln, speichern und alarmieren weiter wie bisher — daran wollte ich nichts ändern. Der Leitstand ist eine kleine eigene Web-App, die diese Daten nur liest. Er hat keine eigene Datenhaltung und kann nichts kaputt machen. Fällt er aus, laufen Überwachung und Alarme unverändert weiter.
The proven tools keep collecting, storing and alerting as before — I didn't want to change any of that. The control room is a small web app of my own that only reads this data. It keeps no data of its own and can't break anything. If it goes down, monitoring and alerts carry on unchanged.
- Nach Fragen sortiert. Läuft alles? Sind die Backups frisch? Sind die Platten gesund? Was ist im Netz los? Jede Ansicht beantwortet eine Frage, nicht eine Messgröße.
- Erst die Lage, dann das Detail. Oben ein Satz und ein paar Zahlen. Die Einzelheiten öffnen sich erst, wenn ich darauf tippe.
- Im eigenen Look, auch am Handy. Gleiche Farben und Schrift wie diese Seite, und auf dem Telefon genauso bedienbar wie am Laptop.
- Sorted by questions. Is everything running? Are the backups fresh? Are the disks healthy? What's going on in the network? Every view answers a question, not a metric.
- Big picture first, details second. One sentence and a few numbers on top. The specifics only open when I tap on them.
- In my own look, on the phone too. Same colours and font as this site, and just as usable on the phone as on the laptop.
03Jeder Wert sagt, wie alt er istEvery value shows its age
Die wichtigste Lektion kam beim Bauen: Ein grüner Haken ist nur so viel wert wie die Messung dahinter. Bei einem meiner Rechner zeigte die alte Übersicht fast drei Monate lang „Festplatten in Ordnung“ — dabei war die Messung längst eingeschlafen. Grün war schlicht der letzte bekannte Stand.
The most important lesson came while building it: a green tick is only worth as much as the measurement behind it. For one of my machines the old overview had shown “disks OK” for almost three months — while the measurement had long since gone to sleep. Green was simply the last known state.
Deshalb steht im Leitstand neben jedem Gesundheitswert, wie frisch er ist. Ist ein Wert älter als erwartet, wird er gelb statt grün. Dabei musste ich lernen, dass „frisch“ nicht für alles dasselbe heißt: Manche Prüfungen laufen stündlich, andere nur einmal pro Woche, und manche melden sich nur, wenn etwas passiert. Eine Pauschalgrenze hätte sofort Fehlalarme produziert.
That's why the control room shows how fresh every health value is. If a value is older than expected, it turns yellow instead of green. I had to learn that “fresh” doesn't mean the same thing for everything: some checks run hourly, others only weekly, and some only report when something happens. A one-size-fits-all limit would have produced false alarms right away.
Wer ein Dashboard baut, sollte sich bei jeder grünen Anzeige fragen: Woher weiß ich, dass die Messung überhaupt noch läuft?
If you build a dashboard, ask yourself for every green indicator: how do I know the measurement is still running at all?
04Was dabei ans Licht kamWhat came to light
Um zu entscheiden, was der Leitstand zeigen soll, habe ich einmal alles nebeneinandergelegt, was gemessen wird, und dazu jede Alarmregel. Dabei fielen Lücken auf, die mir vorher nie aufgefallen waren:
To decide what the control room should show, I laid everything that gets measured side by side, together with every alert rule. That revealed gaps I had never noticed before:
- Platten ohne Alarm. Der Gesundheitszustand der Festplatten wurde gemessen, aber kein Alarm hätte sich gemeldet, wenn eine anfängt zu sterben.
- Dienste, die nur „an“ waren. Einige interne Dienste galten als gesund, solange ihr Rechner lief — ob sie tatsächlich antworten, prüfte niemand.
- Niemand bewachte die Wache. Wäre die Überwachung selbst ausgefallen, hätte schlicht alles geschwiegen. Und Stille sieht genauso aus wie „alles in Ordnung“.
- Disks without alerts. Disk health was measured, but no alert would have fired if one started dying.
- Services that were merely “on”. Some internal services counted as healthy as long as their machine was running — nobody checked whether they actually responded.
- Nobody watched the watch. If monitoring itself had failed, everything would simply have gone silent. And silence looks exactly like “all good”.
Alle drei sind inzwischen geschlossen. Gegen die letzte hilft ein Totmannschalter außer Haus: Die Überwachung schickt ständig ein „Ich lebe noch“ nach draußen. Bleibt es aus, kommt nach wenigen Minuten eine Mail. Ausprobiert habe ich das, indem ich die Alarmierung absichtlich abgeschaltet habe.
All three are closed now. The last one is handled by an off-site dead man's switch: monitoring constantly sends an “I'm still alive” signal outside. If it stops, an e-mail arrives within minutes. I tested it by deliberately switching off the alerting.
05Knöpfe statt KonsoleButtons instead of a console
Der Leitstand zeigt nicht nur an. Routinearbeiten wie einen Update-Durchlauf oder die Prüfung, ob sich Systemdateien unerwartet verändert haben, starte ich per Knopfdruck — auch vom Handy aus. Ausgeführt wird das vom KI-Agenten auf meinem Laptop, nach festen Abläufen. Was wirklich Wirkung hat, etwa ein Neustart, wartet weiterhin auf meine Freigabe.
The control room doesn't just display things. Routine jobs like an update run or the check whether system files have changed unexpectedly are started at the push of a button — from the phone too. The AI agent on my laptop carries them out, following fixed procedures. Anything with real impact, such as a reboot, still waits for my approval.

06Wenn du selbst so etwas willstIf you want something like this yourself
Man muss dafür nicht programmieren können wie ein Profi. Viel wichtiger ist die Vorarbeit: Aufschreiben, welche fünf, sechs Fragen man jeden Tag beantwortet haben will — und erst dann nachsehen, welche Messwerte dazu passen. Andersherum endet man wieder bei einer Wand aus Kurven.
You don't need to code like a professional for this. Far more important is the groundwork: write down the five or six questions you want answered every day — and only then look for the measurements that fit. Do it the other way round and you end up with a wall of graphs again.
