A home that thinks along — and still belongs to me

I don't come from IT. I simply wanted my flat to take care of a few things on its own — without every device needing its own app, and without a manufacturer knowing when I get home. Over time, that turned into a fairly complete smart home. This is what it does, roughly how it works, and what I learned along the way.

01Warum überhaupt?Why bother?

Almost every smart device you buy today first wants an account with its manufacturer and a connection to their cloud. That means when I switch on a light at home, the command travels to a server somewhere in the world — and then back into my living room. If the internet drops, or the manufacturer shuts the service down, the device suddenly turns dumb. And on the side, a fairly precise picture emerges of when I'm awake, when I'm away and how I live.

So my goal from day one was: everything should work locally. The flat should keep running even when the internet outside is gone.

02Was es im Alltag machtWhat it does day to day

The best thing about a good smart home is that you hardly notice it. A few examples:

  • Heating per room: every room has its own target temperature and schedule. If a window is open, the heating in that room turns itself down.
  • Blinds that think along: they go up in the morning when the alarm rings — not at a fixed time. In summer they close before the sun hits the glass full on.
  • Light only when it makes sense: motion sensors switch lights only when it's actually dark and someone is home. Otherwise the cat would light up the flat at night.
  • Appliances that report in: the washing machine says when it's done, including the time left. The robot vacuum speaks up when it gets stuck somewhere.
  • Indoor climate at a glance: if humidity in a corner climbs too high, a dehumidifier kicks in — or a reminder to air the room arrives.

03Wie es grob funktioniertRoughly how it works

At the core there is one hub: Home Assistant, free and open software that runs on my own hardware. It talks to every device — whichever brand — and carries out the rules I give it.

Most sensors and thermostats use their own low-power radio standard to talk directly to that hub — not via Wi-Fi and not via the internet. A rule then reads almost like a sentence: “If there's motion in the hallway, and it's dark, and someone is home — turn on the light.”

And crucially: the normal light switches still work. If the hub ever fails, the flat isn't smart — but it isn't broken either.

04Was ich gelernt habeWhat I learned

  • Erst beobachten, dann automatisieren.
  • Observe first, automate second. The best rules came after a few weeks of just collecting data. Gut feeling is often wrong.
  • Every automation must be explainable. If I can't say in one sentence why the light just came on, the rule is too complicated.
  • Simple rules of my own beat ready-made miracle solutions. The ready-made packages can do a lot, but when something goes wrong you don't understand them.
  • The family is the real test. A smart home is only good once everyone in the household likes it — not just the person who built it.

05Wenn du selbst anfangen willstIf you want to start yourself

Man braucht kein IT-Studium.

You don't need a computer science degree. A small, low-power computer, a radio stick for the sensors and one or two thermostats or motion sensors are enough to start. More important than the technology is the attitude: start small, get one thing right, then the next.

When buying, look for “works locally” or open radio standards. A device that only runs with the manufacturer's app and cloud is hard to get rid of later.
