01Was beobachtet wirdWhat gets watched
Every machine, every service and every drive constantly reports measurements: how full is the disk? How hot is the processor? Is the service still running? Did last night's backup work — and is it actually fresh?
In addition, the logs of every system flow into one place. When something goes wrong I don't have to search ten machines one by one — I see the whole picture at a glance.
02Wie ich davon erfahreHow I find out
When a value deviates, the system sends a message to my phone — through a notification service of my own, not someone else's app. Usually it already says where the cause probably lies.
There's also a dashboard with graphs and traffic lights where long-term trends become visible: the disk that gets a little fuller every week stands out months in advance.
03Das eigentliche Kunststück: wenige, gute AlarmeThe real trick: few, good alerts
At first the system buried me in messages. The problem: an alert that fires too often gets ignored — and then the one that matters gets lost too.
So every alert of mine has to answer one clear question: do I need to act now? If not, it isn't an alert but information for the dashboard.
04Was ich gelernt habeWhat I learned
- An alert only sees what is measured. Green lights only mean: what I measure is fine. What isn't measured can break silently.
- Watch the silence too. When a service stops reporting values, that itself is an alert — otherwise a dead watchdog looks like a quiet day.
- History first, then changes. Before I change anything, I look at the graphs from the past weeks. Often the problem is a different one than expected.
05Wenn du selbst anfangen willstIf you want to start yourself
Start with three questions: is the drive healthy? Is it too full? Did the backup work? If you reliably get told just those three things, you're already a big step ahead of most data losses.
Break something on purpose once and check that the alert actually arrives. An alert that was never tested is a hope.
