The services don't live on one single machine but are spread across several. If one fails or needs maintenance, the important services can keep running on another.
02Die dritte StimmeThe third vote
With two machines there's a tricky problem: if they lose contact, each believes the other has failed — and both want to take over. That can damage data.
The solution is an independent third instance with only one job: to vote. Whoever has two of three votes keeps running; the other stands still. Sounds like democracy, and it is.
03Kleine Wächter für typische PannenLittle watchdogs for typical glitches
Many failures are mundane: the internet connection hangs, a service stops. For those there are small watchdogs that keep an eye on exactly one thing and, if needed, take the first step themselves — and tell me what they did.
And for the worst case there are the backups: nightly, multiple, one of them encrypted off-site.
04Was ich gelernt habeWhat I learned
- A backup only counts once a restore has worked. Before I rely on a backup, I do a test restore. A backup that was never restored is a hope.
- Measure freshness by content. “Backup successful” doesn't mean the right things are in it. I check that the backed-up data is actually current.
- Write down the emergency while everything works. Nobody thinks clearly in a crisis. So for the most important parts, the recovery is ready as a step-by-step guide — written on a calm day.
05Wenn du selbst anfangen willstIf you want to start yourself
The proven 3-2-1 rule is enough for almost any household: three copies of your important data, on two different media, one of them off-site. That can be as simple as an external drive plus an encrypted copy at a relative's place.
Try today whether you can restore a single photo from your backup. It takes five minutes and tells you more than any green tick.
